Oakland Government And Courthouse Information

Oakland’s governance structure is centered on an executive branch, led by the mayor, and a legislative city council. The current mayor, Libby Schaaf, was inaugurated in January 2015 for a four-year term. The city council is made up of eight elected members. Seven represent geographical districts within city limits and one serves at-large. The city attorney, Barbara Parker, was elected in 2012.

Oakland is the third most populous city in the Bay Area and the eighth in California. Situated on the eastern shores of San Francisco Bay in Alameda County, the city is home to the largest port in Northern California. The city’s main attractions include the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum, home of the Raiders, as well as Oracle Arena, Lake Temescal, Lake Merritt (the oldest wildlife and bird sanctuary the U.S.), the Chabot Science and Space Center, the Fox Theater, a bustling Chinatown, an urban wine trail and the vibrant Jack London Square.
